Киприот, победивший на скачках 400 раз

Alkiviades Nicolaou3 cm Сегодня очень немногие знают, что на Кипре есть свой ипподром. Еще меньше людей посещают скачки в качестве развлечения. Однако было время, когда соревнования на лошадях пользовались большой популярностью, а на жокеев смотрели как на звезд. Такой звездой и был незаслуженно забытый сегодня Алкивиадис Николау – жокей, за свою карьеру занимавший первое место на скачках 400 раз.

Счастливое стечение обстоятельств

Алкивиадис родился в 1955 году на северо-западе Кипра, в деревне недалеко от Помоса. И сегодня эти места не особо известны, а во времена молодости Николау они вовсе считались глубокой провинцией, о которой столичные жители даже никогда не слыхали. Он приехал в столицу Кипра в 1967 году, в возрасте 12 лет, чтобы стать жокеем на ипподроме Никосии. Устроиться на ипподром ему помог его дядя, который как раз занимался тренировкой лошадей для скачек. Алкивиадису повезло – среди своих семи братьев он был в возрасте, который считался самым подходящим: вес жокея еще не сильно обременяет лошадь, но при этом сам наездник уже может принимать решения и управлять животным. Алкивиадису ничего не оставалось делать, как воспользоваться возможностью. При этом прежде он не имел никакого представления о лошадях. «Откуда в Помосе взяться лошадям?», – вспоминает он.

Хотя отец изначально был против переезда: Алкивиадис только-только сдал экзамен в гимназию и мог продолжить свое образование. «Я сказал ему: «А что будет, когда я закончу гимназию? Ты собираешься отправить меня в университет?». Тогда отец взмахнул рукой и отвесил мне тяжелую пощечину!», – вспоминает Алкивиадис. Конечно, его родители не могли позволить себе отправить детей в университет – они просто не имели на это средств. Поэтому едкое замечание сына было воспринято отцом как указание на их бедность. Впрочем, дерзость возымела эффект, и отец изменил мнение о будущем сына.

Начало пути

Alkiviades Nicolaou2 cmВ 14 лет Алкивиадис впервые принял участие в скачках в роли жокея. Он до сих пор хранит фото своей первой лошади – Сатраписа. После него в жизни юного жокея было еще много лошадей: например, Фривей, которого владелец дал Алкивиадису покататься, хотя брат владельца тоже был жокеем, или Манникс, темпераментная лошадь, которая отказывалась выходить из стойла, если ей управлял не Алкивиадис.

Переезд в Никосию оказался удачей. Мальчик быстро постигал премудрости управления лошадьми и начал хорошо разбираться в них. Первые пять лет дядя не позволял Алкивиадису совсем ездить в Помос, опасаясь, что он может не вернуться. Шанс, предоставленный ему, обернулся тем, что Алкивиадис в итоге участвовал в гонках более 20 лет, до 1990 года, заняв 400 первых мест.

Звездная рутина

Как ни странно, закат популярности ипподрома в массовой культуре не означает, что сам вид спорта находится в кризисе. У него есть свои верные поклонники. В дни Алкивиадиса скачки проходили раз в неделю, по воскресеньям, сегодня они проводятся два раза в неделю (к воскресеньям добавилась среда). Количество лошадей в каждом заезде увеличилось вдвое.

Рядовой жокей получает 35 евро за гонку. Во времена Алкивиадиса, люди, работающие с лошадьми, сами делали всю работу. Они просыпались в три часа утра, работали в конюшне до одиннадцати, а потом еще пять или шесть часов днем. Сами чистили животных, расчесывали и натирали их. Хозяева были эмоционально привязаны к лошадям и должным образом заботились о них. «В наши дни, – неодобрительно говорит Алкивиадис, – жокей возвращается домой после тренировки, а его место занимает помощник. Если лошадь вся вспотела, он просто хватает шланг и поливает ее из шланга. Неудивительно, что с таким отношением вы больше не найдете хороших лошадей». В прежние времена так делать строжайше запрещалось. Лошадь надо было выгуливать на открытом воздухе не менее 20 минут, осторожно вытирая пот.

На пике популярности

Во времена Алкивиадиса не было букмекерских контор, были только ставки на самом ипподроме. Каждое воскресенье он был переполнен – скачки посещали 7-8 тысяч человек со всего Кипра. Накал страстей на трибунах был сравним с тем, что сегодня происходит на футбольных матчах. В футбол, конечно, тогда тоже играли, но скачки были видом спорта, популярным у высших слоев общества. Когда Алкивиадис посещал фешенебельные рестораны, еда и напитки всегда были за счет заведения. Жена Алкивиадиса Астеро вспоминает, как была поражена тем, сколько людей останавливалось, чтобы поприветствовать ее мужа, когда они впервые начали встречаться. «Кто это был?», – спрашивала она. «Понятия не имею», – отвечал он.

Его отношения с владельцами лошадей также были интересными. Содержать лошадь и участвовать в скачках было признаком настоящего богатства, это стоило 20-30 тысяч долларов в год. Сегодня три-четыре мелких предпринимателя могут объединиться и приобрести лошадь в надежде что-то заработать. Но тогда это было делом статуса, а не заработка. «Это было очень дорогое хобби», – говорит Алкивиадис. Жокеи тоже были строкой в расходах. Хотя за гонку они зарабатывали всего два фунта, основным источником их дохода была шестипроцентная доля любого призового фонда и щедрость владельцев лошадей, которыми они управляли на скачках. Алкивиадис вспоминает одного господина из Кирении, который после победной гонки подозвал его к своей машине и передал толстый конверт. «Я держу лошадь не ради выигрыша, а ради спорта. Сегодня я счастлив, так что оставь деньги себе. Это подарок», – сказал он. В конверте было 500 кипрских фунтов.

Путешествие на Восток

Алкивиадис был желанным гостем на богатых приемах, общался c представителями элиты, причем не только кипрской. Один из его покровителей, «мясной король» Кипра по фамилии Поливиу, продал своего жеребца Ахиллеса II султану Омана, и Алкивиадис провел два месяца в этой арабской стране, чтобы помочь лошади в смене обстановки. Мальчик из бедной провинциальной семьи мог на равных общаться с магнатами и богачами, потому что у них была общая страсть – лошади. Это была единственная тема их разговоров. Для Алкивиадиса это до сих пор его главный интерес. Он рассуждает о лошадях без пренебрежения, но и без особой нежности – как плотник об изготовлении деревянной мебели. «Всегда сидите так, чтобы ваш вес был наклонен вперед». «Никогда не показывайте страха». «Позвольте лошади ступать по-своему, пока она еще в воротах загона, никогда не пытайтесь навязываться». «Будьте терпеливы»: вот его советы о том, как делать свое дело качественно.

Эти свойства проявились и в воспитании детей. Его жена Астеро вспоминает, что он никогда не кричал на дочек, и предполагает, что тут сказалось его умение укрощать самых непокорных животных, которые всегда требуют не силы и жесткости, а простого терпения и любви. Лошади чувствовали его натуру, отсутствие у него страха, реагировали на его терпеливый, но мягкий характер.

После окончания карьеры жокея в 1990 году Алкивиадис еще около 10 лет занимался тренировкой подрастающего поколения, а затем отошел от дел. Сегодня он подумывает о том, чтобы вернуться в родной Помос, где живут его дети и внуки. Но его лошади всегда будут его главной страстью в жизни.

    1            Application of terms

    3            Definitions

    In these Terms:

    Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

    Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

    You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

     

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    4.2        You must:

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

    Republic of Cyprus.

    Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to any dispute connected with these Terms or the

    Website.

    10.3      For us to waive a right under these Terms, the waiver must be in writing.

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
