Майкл Михалис: гончарное ремесло – это тяжёлый труд

Первые вылепленные вручную изделия из глины датируются эпохой неолита, именно поэтому гончарное ремесло по праву считается одним из древнейших на земле. Гончарный круг был изобретен в период с 6000 до 4000 до н.э. Это позволило ремесленникам создавать более пропорциональные и симметричные формы. Следы древнего ремесла были найдены по всему миру.

В последнее десятилетие мода на керамику ручной работы снова вернулась. Мы встретились с основателем и бессменным мастером студии Emira Pottery Майклом Михалисом. Уже более тридцати лет он руководит старейшей гончарной мастерской в Ларнаке и создаёт целые коллекции из керамики.

— Майкл, как вы начали заниматься гончарным делом?

— Моя семья родом из Карпасии. Это регион, который находится недалеко от Фамагусты. В 1968 году я начал учиться гончарному делу в профильной школе Фамагусты, и с тех пор не расстаюсь с глиной. После получения образования я пошёл в армию и служил до 1975 года. До сих пор очень нелегко вспоминать то время, когда мне пришлось участвовать в военном конфликте 1974 года.

Я уехал в Афины, где продолжил заниматься лепкой. Один пожилой маститый гончар взял меня под свою опеку. Я начал помогать ему с раскрашиванием керамики. Прежде он отдавал эту часть работы на сторону. А когда я пришел к нему, он стал поручать эту работу мне. Я набрался опыта и уже в 1977 году открыл свою мастерскую в столице Греции.

Но я был юношей из маленькой деревни. Корни тянули к себе, мне всегда хотелось вырваться из большого города. И в 1987 году я вернулся на Кипр. Вся недвижимость нашей семьи была оккупирована, и правительство выделило нам жильё в турецком квартале Ларнаки. Именно так началась история Emira Pottery. В этом году мы отпразднуем 35-летие мастерской.

— Что означает EMIRA в названии вашей мастерской?

— Это акроним, состоящий из первых букв от имён членов нашей семьи. Моя супруга – Елена, затем – Майкл, наши дети – Ираклис и Андреас. У нас родилось ещё двое детей, но уже после того, как мы придумали название (улыбается).

— Ваш самый любимый этап работы с глиной: лепить или всё же видеть готовое изделие?

— Работа за гончарным кругом уже стала для меня своего рода медитацией. Я могу сделать до ста предметов в день. А если это маленькие однотипные изделия – то 30-40 в час. Несмотря на то, что это тяжёлая рутина, именно лепка и работа с сырой глиной до сих пор завораживают. Представьте, вы просто берёте бесформенный кусок глины и своими руками создаёте что-то новое.

— С какой глиной вам интереснее всего работать? Где вы её покупаете?

— Существует несколько видов глины, и все они имеют разный состав, цвет и свойства. Наиболее распространенными являются: красная глина, белая глина (каолин) и серая. Например, из каолина делают фарфоровую посуду и статуэтки, так как это самая чистая глина. А серая и красная глина предназначена для изготовления каждодневных предметов быта.

Раньше очень качественный материал можно было купить на Кипре. Деревня Корнос была известна своей особенной красной глиной, а Кирения славилась своими гончарами. Но это направление стало неприбыльным, да и гончарных мастерских осталось не так много.

Помню, как под руководством и с финансовой помощью ООН, на Кипр приезжал специалист из Великобритании с целью найти на острове хорошие месторождения глины. На этот проект выделяли около полумиллиона фунтов. Его целью было сооружение завода по производству качественной глины для всего острова – и Южной, и Северной части. Нанятый специалист проработал один месяц и ничего не нашёл.

Сегодня я заказываю глину лучшего качества из Греции, Италии и Великобритании. Она не зернистая, однородная и без примесей.

— Правда ли, что готовое изделие из глины – это результат многочасового процесса?

— Важнейший этап создания любой керамики – обжиг. Без него любая форма, что бы вы ни сделали, снова превратится в кусок глины. При правильной сушке изделия и соблюдении корректной температуры обжига химические соединения глины меняются, и она становится водонепроницаемой. Готовое изделие затвердевает на воздухе в течение 12 часов. После высыхания глина становится очень прочной, не трескается, не усаживается. Получается, от начала лепки до возможности использовать предмет потребуется не меньше 15 часов.

Для сравнения, в Японии до сих пор создают керамику бидзэн. Она имеет тысячелетнюю историю и признана национальным достоянием. Метод работы японских мастеров отличается от европейских тем, что керамику не покрывают глазурью, а только обжигают на протяжении двух недель. И в зависимости от того, как глина взаимодействует с огнём, появляется рисунок, оттенок или узор на готовом изделии.

— Ваши работы – это исключительно традиционные формы и дизайн или многое вы придумываете сами?

— Если нам поступают заказы на традиционные предметы из керамики – амфоры, блюда, кувшины, сувенирная продукция, то мы придерживаемся заданных форм и расцветок. Помимо этого, мы тщательно работаем над дизайном, стараемся придумывать что-то новое, следовать современным тенденциям в сюжетах для росписи керамики.

Одна из самых запоминающихся работ нашей мастерской была создана в 2004 году, когда делегация Республики Кипр полетела на Летние Олимпийские Игры в Афинах. Специально по заказу муниципалитета Ларнаки мы сделали амфору в традиционном стиле. Для росписи приглашали известного колориста, который подобрал цвета, использовавшиеся в античные времена.

— У вас в мастерской сейчас стоят палеты с десятками маленьких амфор, ждущих обжига. Для кого вы делаете подобные заказы?

— Если говорить про амфоры, то в основном – для сувенирных магазинов. Однако большие заказы приходят и от спа-центров, отелей, кафе и ресторанов. Но в этих случаях, как правило, заказывают чаши, пиалы и всевозможные подставки.

Раньше керамика ручной работы была просто необходима: тарелки, чашки, вазы, даже ложки были не декором, а ежедневными предметами использования. Со временем, все перешли на однотипную заводскую керамику – она удобна, красива и проста в быту. Но ведь она лишена уникальности!

Сегодня снова в моду вошла посуда ручной работы. Иметь дома салатник, цветочный горшок или чашку, сделанную мастером специально для тебя, это ли не чудо! Через свои руки гончар передаёт энергетику и настроение.

— Сегодня вы по-прежнему считаете керамику увлечением, приносящим заработок? Или все-таки работой?

— Скорее, это дело жизни. Мой осознанный выбор прикладной специальности и профессии, которую важно сохранить. С детства я привык к тяжёлому труду: из 50 учеников художественной школы только пятеро продолжили своё дело. Мне приятно видеть, что сегодня молодое поколение совершенствуется в гончарном искусстве. Поверьте, им нельзя овладеть за год или два. Я работаю за гончарным кругом уже более 50 лет. И ещё есть в профессии много вещей, которым мне предстоит научиться.

    1            Application of terms

    3            Definitions

    In these Terms:

    Loss includes loss of profits, savings, revenue or data, and any other claim, damage, loss, liability and cost, including legal costs on a solicitor and own client basis

    personal information means information about an identifiable, living person

    Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

    Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

    You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

     

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    4.2        You must:

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

    4.3 You indemnify us against all Loss we suffer or incur as a direct or indirect result of your failure to comply with these Terms.

    10         General

    10.1      If we need to contact you, we may do so by email or by posting a notice on the Website. You agree that this satisfies all legal requirements in relation to written communications.

    10.2      These Terms, and any dispute relating to these Terms or the Website, are governed by and must be interpreted in accordance with the laws of the

    Republic of Cyprus.

    Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to any dispute connected with these Terms or the

    Website.

    10.3      For us to waive a right under these Terms, the waiver must be in writing.

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
