Кипр – один из лидеров по многоязычию

65% взрослых в странах Евросоюза говорят по крайней мере на двух языках. На Кипре этот показатель достигает 90%. Многоязычие является большим преимуществом для детей, которое увеличивается по мере взросления.

Кипр попал в десятку стран с самыми высокими уровнями владения языками. Он уступает только Швеции, Латвии и Дании (97%, 96% и 95% соответственно). Самая многоязычная страна в Европе – Люксембург. Большая часть населения там говорит на четырех языках: официальных люксембургском, французском и немецком, и на английском как языке международного общения.

Какие языки в ходу на Кипре

Знание иностранных языков сильно зависит от образования, возраста и социального положения. Если вы киприот, учившийся в университете, вам меньше 34 лет и вы живете в городе, вы, скорее всего, владеете по крайней мере двумя языками. Вероятнее всего, греческим и английским.

На Кипре многие представители старшего поколения говорят по-гречески, по-турецки и по-английски.

Киприоты, выросшие в странах Африки, часто владеют несколькими местными языками. Уроженец кипрской диаспоры в Зимбабве Лукас говорит изданию Cyprus Mail, что помимо греческого и английского знает языки шона и ндебеле. А киприот из ЮАР Джим говорит на английском, греческом, африкаанс и сото.

Иностранцы, живущие на острове, также часто говорят на нескольких языках. Большинство иммигрантов из стран Азии по необходимости говорят на греческом или английском языках (а часто и на том, и на другом), а также на своем родном языке. Если они выросли в многоязычной стране типа Индии или Филиппин, они вполне могут говорить и на большем количестве языков.

Многие из прибывших на остров европейцев также часто демонстрируют свободное владение несколькими языками. «Дома я говорила по-латышски, в школе изучала русский, в университете в Великобритании училась на английском, а греческий освоила на Кипре, – говорит Катрина, 30-летний бухгалтер из Никосии. – Поскольку я вышла замуж за кувейтца, моя восьмилетняя дочь говорит по-арабски со своим отцом, по-русски со мной, по-гречески в школе и по-английски со своими друзьями».

Посол РФ на Кипре Мурат Зязиков отмечал в своем интервью «Вестнику Кипра», что его впечатлила распространенность русского языка на острове.

Бонусы мультилингвизма

В дальнейшей жизни это многоязычие принесет большую пользу. Дети, владеющие несколькими языками с рождения, часто отстают от своих одноязычных сверстников в раннем возрасте. Среднестатистический восьмилетний ребенок знает в общей сложности 14 000 слов. Если он живет в многоязычной среде, то это будут слова из разных языков.

Но со временем этот дисбаланс исчезает. С возрастом словарный запас ребенка увеличивается на всех языках, на которых он говорит, пока он не узнает примерно одинаковое количество слов на каждом из них. И это большое преимущество. Наряду с очевидными плюсами (понимание иной культуры, улучшение коммуникативной функции, перспективы трудоустройства), дети, владеющие несколькими языками, как правило, больше успевают в школе и добиваются успехов в дальнейшей жизни. Кроме того, было доказано, что владение несколькими языками замедляет наступление возрастных когнитивных нарушений.

«Мой отец с Кипра, моя мать из Италии, они общаются на английском, – говорит 26-летняя жительница Лимассола Виттория. – Я помню, как сбивала с толку своих воспитателей в детском саду, вставляя в разговор итальянские слова, когда не знала греческого эквивалента. Но к тому времени, когда я начала учиться в гимназии, я умела легко переключаться между тремя языками».

Для Виттории это оказалось очень полезно: «Я изучала микробиологию в университете. Знание греческого языка – огромное благо в науке, где многие слова имеют греческое происхождение. А итальянский происходит от латыни, из которой в английский заимствовано множество терминов».

Китайский и английский

По числу носителей мандаринский китайский – самый распространенный язык на планете, на нем говорят 1,1 миллиарда человек. Но если считать не число носителей, а число говорящих, то самым распространенным оказывается английским, которым владеют 1,4 миллиарда человек по всему миру. Для носителей английского это означает, что их поймут в любой точке земного шара, поэтому среди них меньше всего процент людей, знающих другой язык.

«Последние два года я был туроператором в Айя-Напе, – говорит 24-летний выходец из Бристоля Пит. – Я имею дело только с туристами из Великобритании, так что мне не нужно говорить ни на каких других языках. Да, я знаю несколько слов по-гречески, но все на острове – особенно в индустрии гостеприимства – очень хорошо говорят по-английски. Так что мне никогда не нужно было учиться другим языкам. Я чувствую себя немного виноватым, мне следовало бы лучше говорить на греческом. Но в следующем году я, вероятно, буду работать в Испании, а после этого – в Турции. Какая мне там польза от греческого языка?»

Согласно исследованию Евростата, только 34% британцев говорят на одном или нескольких иностранных языках. И это часто правда даже для детей мигрантов, перебравшихся в Соединенное Королевство. «Мои родители эмигрировали с Кипра в Великобританию в 1960-х годах, – говорит 51-летний уроженец Лондона Марко. – Мы с братом ходили в английскую школу, у нас были друзья-англичане. Мы смотрели “Би-би-си” и слушали местное радио. И хотя мы посещали уроки греческого языка по утрам в субботу, мы никогда по-настоящему на нем не говорили».

Это стало серьезным препятствием в общении с родственниками, которые приезжали к ним в гости с Кипра. А когда Марко и его сын переехали в Ларнаку в прошлом году, незнание греческого вызвало дополнительные проблемы. «Я впервые осознал, какую ошибку я совершил, не выучив греческий. Не ради себя, а ради сына-подростка. Как и я, он говорит только по-английски, а дети моих друзей знают два или три языка. Я вижу, насколько это полезно, каким преимуществом это многоязычие станет для них в будущем. Я думаю, что владение только одним языком, независимо от того, насколько оно продвинуто, действительно ограничивает ваше понимание мира», – заключает Марко.

    1            Application of terms

    In these Terms:

    Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

    Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

    You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

     

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    4.2        You must:

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

    4.3 You indemnify us against all Loss we suffer or incur as a direct or indirect result of your failure to comply with these Terms.

    10.2      These Terms, and any dispute relating to these Terms or the Website, are governed by and must be interpreted in accordance with the laws of the

    Republic of Cyprus.

    Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to any dispute connected with these Terms or the

    Website.

    10.3      For us to waive a right under these Terms, the waiver must be in writing.

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
