Кипр хранит множество археологических сокровищ, которые рассказывают о его тысячелетней истории: от загадочного помосского идола, ставшего символом острова, до «кипрской терракотовой армии». Эти находки открывают дверь в мир древних культов, ремесел и верований, благодаря которым Кипр стал важнейшим центром цивилизаций Восточного Средиземноморья.

Помосский идол

Помосский идол – один из главных символов Кипра, который можно увидеть, например, на монетах в один и два евро или на входе в аэропорт Пафоса. Это очень древнее изображение человека с разведенными руками, которое датируется примерно 3000 годом до н.э., то есть эпохой медного века.

Подобных идолов на Кипре находили и находят в больших количествах, в чем можно убедиться, посетив Кипрский музей в Никосии. Известно, что их клали в могилы женщин и детей. Таких же идолов находят и на развалинах храмов. Есть предположение, что они символизируют плодородие и изображают сидящую женскую фигуру (именно в таком положении в те времена проходили роды), хотя установить пол со стопроцентной точностью невозможно. В высоту найденные идолы могут достигать от 5 до 15 см. Вероятно, их носили на шее в качестве амулета, что подтверждает наличие крепления на некоторых экземплярах.

Первые такие фигурки были найдены в деревне Помос, откуда и пошло название «помосский идол», но теперь известно, что таких же идолов делали в районе современных деревень Лемба, Эрими, Киссонерга. В Сускью археологи даже обнаружили доисторическую мастерскую по изготовлению таких фигурок с остатками рабочих материалов и бракованными идолами.

Кипрская терракотовая армия

В 1927 году на Кипр прибыла шведская археологическая миссия, которой покровительствовал наследный принц Швеции Густав Адольф. Миссию возглавляли Эйнар Гьерстад, Эрик Сьоквист и Альфред Вестхольм. Спустя два года, независимо от работы шведских археологов, приходской священник из деревни Агиа Ирини, отец Прокопиос, во время пахоты на своем поле внезапно нашел голову глиняной статуи и передал ее Археологическому музею в Никосии. Шведские ученые, которые изучили находку, датировали ее VI в до н.э. и начали раскопки. Вскоре они сделали потрясающее открытие – древнее языческое святилище, в котором обнаружили две тысячи глиняных фигур разного размера: мужчины в полный рост в военном снаряжении и быки, запряженные в колесницы, были поставлены полукругом вокруг алтаря. Из двух тысяч фигурок, которые датируются временем между 1200 и 500 гг. до н.э., 1500 были вывезены в Швецию, остальные сегодня можно увидеть в Кипрском музее в Никосии.

Нельзя с полной уверенностью сказать, что за святилище было обнаружено в Агия Ирини. Ученые до сих пор спорят, к какому времени оно относится, с каким древним городом-царством связано и какому божеству или божествам посвящено. Высказывалось предположение, что это алтарь ближневосточного бога Баала, культ которого был распространен в Финикии и близлежащих странах.

Статуя Рогатого бога из Энгоми

Статуэтка высотой 61 см изображает бога Аполлона. Она была найдена во время раскопок древнего города Аласия в месте Энгоми недалеко от Фамагусты (не путать с одноименным районом Никосии). 

Древний город Аласия был заброшен около 1100 года до н. э., когда его жители переместились в Саламин, расположенный в 2-3 км к западу. В новое время на его месте возникло селение Энгоми, по названию которого стали именовать и развалины древнего города-царства.

Аласия была важным городом в истории Средиземноморья позднего бронзового века, то есть примерно с середины XVII века до н.э. до конца XII века до н.э. Правитель Аласии поддерживал контакты с фараоном Египта, правителями Ассирии, Вавилона, Микен. Главной причиной этого были богатые местные месторождения меди ― металла, который имел большое значение для экономик древнего мира.

Крупные раскопки начались на территории Энгоми в 1930-х годах, под руководством выдающегося кипрского археолога Порфириоса Дикеоса.

Статуя Рогатого бога датируется XIII в. до н.э. Ученые сходятся во мнении, что это изображение Аполлона, которого в греческой Аркадии и на Кипре называли Кереат, то есть «рогатый». Статуя находилась в храме, который был открыт археологами в 1948-1951 гг. В помещении, где ее нашли, находился алтарь божества и стол для приношений. Вокруг алтаря сохранилось множество черепов быков и других рогатых животных.

Чаша из Вуно

Небольшая чаша, обнаруженная в гробнице бронзового века близ селения Вуно (сегодня на оккупированных территориях, турецкое название – Ташкент) в 1930-х годах. Выставлена в Кипрском музее в Никосии. Кипрское искусство этого времени популярно благодаря своему изображению человеческих фигур. Большие и маленькие, схематичные или более детальные (но все равно неправдоподобные) фигурки украшают множество керамических изделий.

Чаша датируется 2025–1850 годами до н.э. Ее размеры – всего 37 см в ширину и 8 см в глубину. Внутри чаши находится тщательно продуманная сцена: 18 человеческих фигур, четыре миниатюрные коровы в огороженных загонах, мебель, сооружение, похожее на святилище, и прямоугольный проем. Люди изображены стоящими или сидящими со скрещенными руками, некоторые – в коленопреклонении. Центральная фигура в головном уборе, по-видимому, восседает на троне.

Точное назначение чаши остается неясным, но большинство ученых сходятся во мнении, что она была создана для церемониальных или погребальных целей. Возможно, ее демонстрировали на собраниях элиты или религиозных праздниках, либо клали в захоронения высокопоставленных лиц.

В исследовании, проведенном в 1994 году археологом Эдгаром Пелтенбургом, было высказано предположение, что чаша представляет три различных слоя: скотоводческую жизнь, становление мужской власти и духовную сферу.

Использование скульптурных фигур внутри сосуда делает его уникальным в кипрской и мировой археологии.

Медное руно

В декабре 2024 года на Кипр вернулись 266 предметов старины, которые ранее находились в частной коллекции в США. Среди них был редкий медный слиток в форме бычьей шкуры, которых на Кипре за всю историю раскопок было найдено всего три. 

Артефакты были вывезены с Кипра в 1930 году соучредителем и владельцем компании Cyprus Mines Corporation Харви Маддом. Для этого он специально получил разрешение Департамента древностей. После смерти предпринимателя-коллекционера его семья основала колледж его имени, а после смерти его вдовы коллекция была передана в дар колледжу. Виктория Мадд, внучка Харви, выразила желание, чтобы коллекция была возвращена на Кипр. Соответствующее соглашение было подписано в 2018 году.

Медное руно – один из выдающихся артефактов этой коллекции. Оно датируется поздним бронзовым веком. Медь, добытую на острове, переплавляли в такие слитки и экспортировали. Это было удобно для ведения учета, так как вес у слитков был стандартным. Один из них сегодня хранится в Британском музее в Лондоне, два – в Кипрском музее в Никосии.
