Священный Царский и Ставропигиальный монастырь святого Неофита Затворника расположен примерно в 10 км к северу от Пафоса, недалеко от деревни Тала. Он связан с судьбой одного из самых почитаемых кипрских святых, человека, который прошел путь от неграмотного пастуха до одного из самых плодовитых писателей средневизантийского Кипра.
Неофит родился в 1134 году в бедной крестьянской семье в деревне Като Дрис, недалеко от Лефкары. С детства его тянуло к монашеству, но когда юноше исполнилось 18 лет, родители решили его женить. Неофит тайно покинул отчий дом и стал послушником монастыря Святого Иоанна Златоуста на севере острова.
Настоятель дал неграмотному юноше послушание ухаживать за монастырскими виноградниками. Пять лет Неофит совмещал тяжёлый труд с учением: за это время он освоил грамоту, изучил Священное Писание и выучил наизусть Псалтырь. Дважды он просил разрешения стать отшельником, и дважды получал отказ: настоятель считал его слишком молодым. Тогда Неофит отправился искать наставника-отшельника — сначала в Святую Землю, а затем в Малую Азию. В порту Пафоса его арестовали как беглого монаха и посадили в тюрьму, освободили только благодаря заступничеству влиятельных знакомых.
Прибыв на Кипр в 1152 году, Неофит стремился к уединённой жизни. В 1159 году он нашёл небольшую пещеру недалеко от Пафоса и за год упорного труда устроил в ней церковь и скит, получивший название Энклистра, «место уединения». Здесь же он вырубил келью (в которой сразу выкопал себе могилу), а рядом — трапезную и часовню в честь Честного Креста. Семь лет Неофит провёл в полном одиночестве, посте и молитве.
Слухи о праведном затворнике постепенно разошлись по округе и дошли до епископа Пафоса Василия Киннамоса. В 1166 году тот предложил Неофиту принять священнический сан и взять учеников. Отшельник сопротивлялся четыре года, но в итоге согласился, и вокруг его кельи начала складываться монашеская община.
Наплыв учеников и паломников со временем стал мешать Неофиту так же, как когда-то мешала мирская жизнь. В 1197 году он вырубил в скале ещё одну келью, над первой, выше по склону, и назвал её «Новый Сион». С тех пор он спускался к братии только по воскресеньям, для совместной службы, а остальное время проводил в затворе, за писательским трудом.
Расширил он и саму Энклистру: высек в скале ещё одну небольшую часовню в честь Иоанна Крестителя. После 1220 года сведений о каких-либо переменах в скиту больше нет: дальнейшая жизнь монастыря шла уже вокруг этого святого места.
Стены Энклистры расписал в 1183 году константинопольский иконописец Феодор Апсевдис, его подпись сохранилась на северной стене кельи святого. Роспись 1183 и 1196 годов сделана по личному благословению Неофита, а в 1503 году фрески были обновлены и дополнены.
Среди них сцены Страстей Господних, «Тайная вечеря», «Омовение ног», «Молитва в Гефсиманском саду», «Путь на Голгофу», «Распятие». Самая впечатляющая роспись находится над алтарём: Неофит в ангельском облачении молитвенно просит архангелов о заступничестве. В келье другая фреска: святой коленопреклонённо молится Христу, а по сторонам, в молении, Богородица и Иоанн Креститель.
Главный храм монастыря, церковь Пресвятой Богородицы, была построена в начале XVI века, а ее своды были расписаны в 1544 году. Здание представляет собой купольную базилику с заметным влиянием венецианского стиля: боковые приделы отделены колоннадами с псевдокоринфскими капителями.
Иконостас, вырезанный из дерева — один из немногих сохранившихся на Кипре образцов резьбы XVI века. Небольшие иконы двунадесятых праздников написаны в 1544 году в византийской традиции эпохи Палеологов, а образ самого святого Неофита создал в 1806 году известный кипрский мастер Иоаннис Коронарос. Серебряная рака с честной главой святого изготовлена в 1802 году.
Есть в храме и неожиданная деталь: на восточной стороне северного придела сохранилась фреска Святой Троицы в «западном» иконографическом варианте (Бог Отец, Христос и Святой Дух в виде голубя), а не в привычной для византийской традиции композиции.
В 1735 году монастырь посетил русский монах Василий Григорович-Барский. Он оставил подробное описание обители и сделал зарисовки, которые века спустя использовались при её реставрации. Пещеру святого он сравнил с «ласточкиным гнездом», настолько неприступным был подъём к ней.
Не всё в истории монастыря было мирным. В 1570 году обитель разграбили турки, а позже, по указу султана, монастырь и вовсе продали, монахи были вынуждены его покинуть. Возрождение началось только в 1611 году, при игумене Леонтии. А в 1821 году, во время репрессий, которые турки обрушили на кипрское духовенство в ответ на греческое восстание, игумен монастыря Иоаким был подвергнут пыткам и казнён.
Точная дата смерти Неофита неизвестна, известно лишь, что он успел закончить своё последнее сочинение, «Ритуал таинства» (рукопись хранится сегодня в библиотеке Эдинбурга). По воле святого его похоронили в могиле, которую он выкопал себе сам, а проём заложили стеной, чтобы скрыть от посторонних глаз. Со временем точное место погребения было забыто, лишь в 1756 году, спустя века, мощи святого нашли и перенесли в главный храм.
Неграмотный крестьянский юноша стал одним из самых плодовитых писателей средневизантийского периода. Неофит оставил более десятка сочинений, среди них «О бедствиях в Кипрской стране» и «Слово на шестоднёв», проповеди и комментарии к Библии. Исследователи считают его одним из первых историков острова: его тексты — ценный источник сведений о жизни средневекового Кипра.
В восточном корпусе монастыря открыт музей с иконами XII–XIX веков, рукописями (включая автограф самого Неофита), печатными книгами и античной керамикой. Русскоязычный посетитель обязательно заметит поминальный синодик о пожертвованиях, которые собирали на монастырь в России в 1863 году, шитую золотом плащаницу и икону «Венчание Богородицы» русского письма.
По дороге от монастыря стоит заехать в деревню Эмпа и увидеть церковь Панагии Хриселеусы, византийскую крестово-купольную базилику XII века с росписями XV столетия и резным иконостасом XVI века.
Престольный праздник главного храма монастыря — 15 августа, Успение Пресвятой Богородицы. Память самого святого Неофита отмечают дважды в год: 24 января и 28 сентября, когда в обители проходит крестный ход с его мощами.
