Монастырь Николая Чудотворца: кошачья обитель

Монастырь Святого Николая расположен на полуострове Акротири, примерно в 15 км к западу от Лимассола. Монахини этой обители обижаются, когда её называют просто «кошачьей»: монастырь посвящён святителю Николаю, покровителю моряков и рыбаков, и был основан более полутора тысяч лет назад. Но без кошек здесь действительно не обошлось: они и правда часть его истории.

Змеиное нашествие

По преданию, в IV веке на Кипре случилась двадцатилетняя засуха, из-за которой на острове расплодилось огромное количество ядовитых змей. Их было так много, что местные жители начали покидать остров.
Примерно в это же время царица Елена, мать императора Константина Великого, возвращалась из Святой земли с обретённым Животворящим Крестом Господним и по пути пристала к берегам Кипра, к востоку от Лимассола. С тех пор эта местность носит название Василикон, «Царская».

Один визит, несколько монастырей

С путешествием царицы Елены по острову связана целая цепочка кипрских святынь. В монастыре в селении Омодос она оставила частицу Животворящего Креста. Монастырь Ставровуни был основан по ее приказу — и в нем она также оставила частицу реликвии. А еще Елена обнаружила источник со святой водой, возле которого позже возник монастырь святой Феклы.

Что же касается обители на полуострове Акротири, известной сегодня как монастырь Святителя Николая, то, хотя документальных подтверждений этому нет, считается, что и она была основана по указанию Елены в 327 году наместником Кипра Калокерасом. Позднее храм монастыря освятили в честь Николая Чудотворца.

Откуда взялись кошки

Куда бы ни приезжала Елена, всюду её встречали змеи. Вернувшись в Константинополь, она распорядилась доставить на Кипр из Египта и Малой Азии тысячи кошек, поручив заботу о них монахам. Кошки прижились во многих кипрских монастырях, и живут при них до сих пор. Монастырь Николая Чудотворца в этом смысле не уникален: в женском монастыре святого отшельника Кендея, по рассказам местных, кошек живёт даже больше.
Со своей задачей усатые хищники справились на отлично: змей на острове стало значительно меньше. С тех пор к кошкам на Кипре особое отношение.

От расцвета до запустения

Во времена иконоборчества монастырь служил убежищем для монахов, преследуемых в Византии. Позднее, когда Кипром правили католики-крестоносцы, здесь, по преданию, проживало несколько сотен монахов. На стенах церкви сохранились фрески XIII века, свидетельство того периода. После изгнания крестоносцев и перехода Кипра к Османской империи в XVI веке монастырь опустел, а землетрясения довершили разрушение построек.

Один монах против запустения

Возрождение растянулось на десятилетия и началось с истории одного человека. В 1974 году в опустевшую обитель перебрался пожилой монах Варнава, беженец из монастыря Апостола Варнавы, оказавшегося на оккупированной территории. Он в одиночку принялся восстанавливать монастырь, но вскоре скончался, не успев довести дело до конца.

По-настоящему обитель возродилась в 1983 году благодаря помощи митрополита Лимассольского Хрисанфоса: были возведены новые постройки, отреставрирована церковь. При этом монастырь, изначально бывший мужским, стал женским. Здесь поселились две монахини, сестра Кассиания и сестра Эльпида, а в 1992 году к ним присоединились ещё четыре сестры. Сегодня в обители живут шесть монахинь.

Храм монастыря

Одноуровневая сводчатая церковь обители построена в XIV веке. Вход в главный храм украшен рельефными фигурами апостолов Петра и Павла, а над восточной дверью пять гербов, два из которых принадлежат роду Лузиньянов, наследие эпохи крестоносцев. Внутри сохранились следы старинных фресок, а в юго-восточной части храма, у иконостаса, находится чудотворная икона святого Николая.

Сотня кошек на скромном довольствии

Точное число кошек монахини сами не берутся назвать. По их словам, на территории обители их живёт около сотни. Из-за «кошачьей» славы монастыря животных сюда постоянно подкидывают, в том числе котят и больных кошек, которым требуется лечение и уход. Средств у шести пожилых монахинь немного: кошкам достаются каши, рыбные отходы, макароны и размоченный хлеб. В такой ситуации приветствуется любая помощь. Местные рыбаки, впрочем, помогают по-своему: в день памяти Николая Чудотворца они отдают монастырским кошкам весь улов этого дня.

Пополнить монастырскую казну можно в лавке: здесь продают свежевыжатое оливковое масло Extra Virgin и домашнее варенье из фруктов монастырского сада.

Отправляясь в монастырь, стоит захватить с собой корм для кошек: местные жители относятся к этому как к само собой разумеющемуся.

Когда ехать

Монастырь открыт ежедневно с 7:00 до 12:00 и с 14:00 до 17:00.

Его престольный праздник — 6 декабря, день памяти святителя Николая Чудотворца.

Loss includes loss of profits, savings, revenue or data, and any other claim, damage, loss, liability and cost, including legal costs on a solicitor and own client basis

Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

 

4            Your obligations

4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

information remains true, current and complete.

a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
