Кошки в монастыре Святого Николая: легенда расходится с реальностью

На полуострове Акротири в регионе Лимассола находится одно из самых необычных мест Кипра – монастырь Святого Николая Кошачьего, Агиос Николаос тон Гатон. Сюда приезжают ради старинного монастыря, красивой легенды и, конечно, кошек. Люди видят благостную картину, но даже не представляют, что за всем этим стоит маленькая группа волонтеров, о чьем подвиге мы хотели бы рассказать.

Согласно преданию, история кошек в этих местах началась еще в IV веке. После продолжительной засухи полуостров заполонили ядовитые змеи. Легенда гласит, что по приказу Святой Елены на Кипр привезли множество кошек, которые помогли очистить эту местность от змей. Прошли столетия, а кошки остались неотъемлемой частью образа монастыря. Сегодня они встречают посетителей у ворот, лежат в тени деревьев, выглядывают из домиков и охотно общаются с туристами.

Легко предположить, что животные находятся на попечении монастыря. На самом это не так. Монахини, живущие в монастыре, уже в преклонном возрасте. Монастырская жизнь сама по себе требует сил, и заниматься еще и большим количеством животных им физически трудно. Поэтому кормление, лечение и многие другие повседневные заботы о кошках взяли на себя добровольцы.

Во главе этой небольшой команды – Татьяна Христофору. Мы поговорили с Татьяной о том, как однажды помощь нескольким кошкам превратилась в значительную часть ее жизни и почему их маленькой команде так нужны дополнительные руки.
«Я просто начала приезжать сюда»

Татьяна, как вообще началась ваша история с кошками монастыря?

Восемь лет назад я приехала на Кипр, вышла замуж. Супруг знал, что я очень люблю животных, и однажды привез меня посмотреть монастырь.

Помню, что было холодно, шел дождь. Кошек тогда было совсем немного — около десяти, и практически все больные: чихали, выглядели плохо. Корм лежал размокший. Мне стало их очень жалко, захотелось хотя бы покормить. Монахини разрешили, но только в стороне от монастыря. Наверное, с этого все и началось.

Вы сразу понимали, что будете приезжать сюда постоянно?

Поначалу я просто хотела хоть как-то помочь несчастным животным. У меня тогда даже машины не было. Я стала писать в группы в социальных сетях, рассказывать о кошках, просить о помощи. Люди откликались, скидывались на корм и лечение.

Потом я получила права и смогла ездить сама. Постоянной работы у меня в тот период не было, поэтому практически всю себя я отдавала животным.

Все происходило постепенно. Я увидела, что кошкам негде укрываться от дождя и холода, и решила сделать для них домики. А около шести лет назад поняла, что хочу заниматься ими постоянно.

Я тогда не знала греческого, и другие волонтеры помогали мне договариваться с настоятелем и монахинями. В итоге нам выделили место на парковке за территорией монастыря, где мы смогли обустроить пространство для кошек.

У нас с монахинями сложился своего рода паритет: они живут своей жизнью, а нам позволяют заботиться о животных. В конце концов, это все-таки Кошачий монастырь.
Работа, которую турист обычно не видит

Как выглядит ваш обычный приезд сюда?

От дома до монастыря мне ехать около двадцати минут, а здесь я провожу примерно два часа. Сейчас я работаю на двух работах, но все равно нахожу время для животных.

Нужно навести порядок, покормить, поменять воду, помыть миски, осмотреть кошек. Я слежу за тем, не заболел ли кто-то, не требуется ли кому-то медицинская помощь. Поливаю растения, высаживаю новые.

Постоянно нужно проверять, не подбросил ли кто-нибудь новорожденных котят. Для них оказаться здесь – практически верная смерть. В большой стае малыши просто не выживут, очень быстро подхватят инфекцию или будут забиты.

Я приезжаю через день. От меня действительно зависит жизнь этих кошек. На постоянной основе мне помогают еще две девушки.

Сколько кошек сейчас живет здесь?

Больше ста. Возможно, уже около ста пятидесяти. И это большая проблема, потому что люди видят здесь много кошек и почему-то решают: раз их и так столько, можно привезти еще одну и оставить. Иногда сюда просто выбрасывают ненужных домашних животных. Этого нельзя делать ни в коем случае. За каждой новой кошкой стоит дополнительная ответственность, а весь этот груз в итоге приходится нести мне.

То есть кормление – только небольшая часть всех забот?

Конечно. Кошек нужно лечить, стерилизовать. Кому-то нужна передержка. Помимо еды им постоянно необходима чистая вода. Я строго слежу за тем, чтобы вода не стояла долго и не начинала цвести.

Кипрский климат тоже имеет свои особенности. Летом — жара, зимой — холод. Перед зимой нужно подготовить домики, постелить теплые одеяла. Но болезни от сезона не зависят – животные болеют круглый год.
Когда волонтерство становится частью жизни

Насколько сильно все это изменило вашу собственную жизнь?

Не изменило, а стало ее частью. Хочу я этого, или нет.

Я могу куда-то уехать на несколько дней, но тогда сначала должна найти людей, которые будут меня заменять. И с каждым разом это становится сделать все сложнее. Сейчас помощников практически нет.

Нельзя просто решить: сегодня я не поеду. Здесь живые существа, которым нужны еда, вода и уход.

Бывают моменты, когда кажется, что вы больше не справляетесь?

Да. Самое тяжелое – финансовая сторона. Счета в ветеринарных клиниках растут, постоянно нужно покупать корм, оплачивать стерилизацию, передержку. Все эти расходы постоянно держишь в голове. Иногда становится очень тяжело.

И что тогда помогает продолжать?

Понимание того, что без меня эти животные просто не выживут.

И, конечно, люди. Я невероятно радуюсь, когда кто-нибудь предлагает помощь. Без волонтеров я бы уже давно опустила руки. Благодаря неравнодушным людям удается продолжать.

Самая нужная помощь – человеческие руки

Сейчас вам регулярно помогают всего два человека. Какая помощь нужна больше всего?

На самом деле – любая. Рук катастрофически не хватает.

Нужна помощь с кормлением, нужны средства на оплату ветеринарных клиник. Нужно отвозить заболевших животных к врачу и привозить обратно. Даже обычная помощь здесь, на месте, очень важна.

Например, огромной поддержкой для нас стало то, что компания Creative Universe выделила средства на покупку автомата с кормом, а волонтеры помогли его установить. Желающий опускает монетку, после чего автомат выдает порцию сухого корма. Но желающих не так много в последнее время.

Корм нужен постоянно. Лечение нужно постоянно. Поэтому я не откажусь ни от какой помощи.

Если человек хочет приехать и помочь лично, ему обязательно нужен опыт обращения с животными?

Нет, никакой специальной подготовки не требуется. Я всему научу.

Здесь всегда есть работа: помыть миски, поменять воду, насыпать корм, проверить, все ли кошки поели.

Важно следить и за малышами, и за более робкими животными. Бывает, что активные кошки отталкивают их от еды, поэтому недостаточно просто наполнить миски и уйти. Нужно убедиться, что еда действительно досталась всем.

Так что главное – не опыт. Главное, чтобы человек был готов приехать и помочь.

Люди за легендой

Легенда о кошках монастыря Святого Николая существует много веков. Но сегодняшние кошки живут не в легенде. Им нужны еда и чистая вода. Они болеют, стареют, получают травмы. Домики приходится строить и ремонтировать. Корм нужно покупать, привозить и раскладывать. И не разово, а на регулярной основе.

Турист может этого не заметить. Он увидит красивый монастырь, кошек, миски и домики, сделает фотографии и уедет с ощущением, что именно так здесь было всегда. А за кадром останутся волонтеры, руками которых все это создано.

4            Your obligations
