Граффити: вандализм или историческое свидетельство?

Когда в мае этого года ректор Института Кипра Костас Папаниколас посетил Ватикан, он сделал папе Франциску уникальный подарок: точную копию детали настенной росписи XIV века из катакомб св. Соломонии в Пафосе. Такая копия стала возможна благодаря высокотехничному фотографированию и моделированию изображений в 2D и 3D.

Живописцы, археологи и искусствоведы из Лаборатории художественной характеризации им. Андреаса Питтаса (APAC) при Институте Кипра использовали традиционную византийскую технику фресковой живописи, чтобы сделать точную копию изображения. Что еще более важно, современные средства позволили детально воспроизвести оригинальные граффити, вырезанные на стене.

Словом «граффити» археологи называют надписи, сделанные на разных исторических предметах или поверхностях исторических зданий. Подобные надписи часто оставляли, например, паломники, которые хотели таким образом отметить факт своего посещения того или иного места. Когда люди обнаруживают такие надписи на стенах церквей, они часто ошибочно полагают, что это результат вандализма, в то время как средневековые граффити имели совсем другую цель, рассказывает Миа Трентин, младший научный сотрудник и руководитель команды APAC. «Граффити – это настоящий подарок, – говорит она. – Понимание того, что в наше время недопустимо писать на стенах, особенно исторических памятников, было ложно применено и к прошлому. Однако оставленные граффити в целом, а тем более в религиозном пространстве, направлены в первую очередь на то, чтобы усилить чье-то присутствие в этом конкретном месте». Ученый отмечает: в рамках разработанного в XIX веке подхода к сохранению культурного наследия граффити стали считаться не более, чем «порчей поверхностей». «Теперь мы думаем, что должны сохранить наследие таким, какое оно есть, и не вносить никаких изменений. В прошлом отношение к общественному пространству было более демократичным, не таким избирательным. Каждый мог оставить свой след на общественных памятниках. На основе сохранившихся надписей мы можем, например, сказать, какие церкви или какие святые были наиболее популярны. Граффити было средством взаимодействия с местами, которые люди считали важными», – рассказывает исследователь.

Кроме того, средневековые граффити демонстрируют способность авторов использовать различные коммуникационные и письменные системы для самовыражения, поскольку посетители оставляли имена, молитвы, рисунки и другую информацию, которую, по их мнению, стоило оставить в важном для них месте. Содержание их сообщений меняется с течением времени, рассказывая ученым подробнее о местной истории. Более того, предварительный анализ кипрских граффити позволяет изучать повседневные практики, которые все еще мало исследованы, например, магии и суеверий наравне с религией. «Наличие и распространение граффити на Кипре свидетельствует о распространении этих практик среди местных жителей и иностранцев, которые посещали Кипр или жили на острове, предлагая живой и оригинальный взгляд на прошлое нашего общества», – уверена Миа Трентин.

Такие послания, оставленные в культовых местах, часто были неотделимой частью паломничества, добавляет доцент Николас Бакирдзис, директор APAC. «Монахи и другие представители духовенства разрешали людям оставлять пометки, давали им доступ к фрескам, чтобы они могли записать поверх свое имя или нанести другие символы», – поясняет он. Конечно, не обходилось и без актов очевидного вандализма, например, когда туристы удаляли часть фрески. Но и это говорит о народных практиках, например, паломник забирал немного краски с фресок в районе глаз изображенных святых, чтобы затем смешать эту краску с водой и пить как магическое средство от потери зрения. «У них не было никакого намерения что-либо уничтожать», – говорит Бакирдзис.

Он считает, что новые открытия в этой сфере имеют большой потенциал. Граффити, дошедшие до нас из прежних эпох, дают новые знания о прошлом, служат хорошим источником исторических данных. Это процветающая область исследований, которая проливает новый свет на летопись острова, экономические и культурные пути обмена в Средиземноморье.

По словам Мии Трентин, тот факт, что на Кипре можно найти надписи, сделанные пятью разными алфавитами, а также разнообразие форм и графических мотивов отражают мультикультурный характер данной территории. Это объясняет, почему в дар папе Франциску было сделано именно это изображение. «Мы выбрали конкретную деталь средневековой фрески, где граффити сделаны на греческом, латинском и армянском языках, что подчеркивает мультикультурную популярность того знакового места в Пафосе, откуда это изображение было взято», – поясняет Бакирдзис.

    1            Application of terms

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
